THE GATE OF THE NEW YEAR

Here's a fitting poem as we approach the new year.  If you love old movies, perhaps you are familiar with it, as it's read at the end of The Mortal Storm.  It's known as The Gate of the Year, but it's actual title is God Knows.

God Knows
And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: “Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”
And he replied:
“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”
So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night. And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.
So heart be still: What need our little life Our human life to know, If God hath comprehension? In all the dizzy strife Of things both high and low, God hideth His intention.
God knows. His will Is best. The stretch of years Which wind ahead, so dim To our imperfect vision, Are clear to God. Our fears Are premature; In Him, All time hath full provision.
Then rest: until God moves to lift the veil From our impatient eyes, When, as the sweeter features Of Life’s stern face we hail, Fair beyond all surmise God’s thought around His creatures Our mind shall fill.
~Minnie Louise  Haskins~

Wishing all my dear friends a happy and hopeful New Year!

  3. Hello Regina! Yes the magazine arrived! So many pretties. Where to start? Right now I'm knitting some adorable owl mittens that hopefully will be completed soon so that I can share the pattern with you. It's free!

Oh aren't men romantic, Andrea? Just as well, as I wasn't expecting anything anyway. I'm tired of all the celebrating and can't wait for life to get back to normal.

  7. It's one of my favorites, April. It does a better job of summing up my thoughts on the approaching new year, than I could ever write!

Thanks Matty! I'll probably start on the project that I can find yarn for. Can't wait to visit a real yarn shop, the craft stores just aren't cutting it lately! What have you been working on?

And a happy New Year to you, Shara! Are you back from your trip?

  15. Hi Sandra! I must be getting old and setting my ways, this year's upset of my routine affected me more than it ever has before. Hope you are enjoying your holiday!

Hi Delisa! That's one of my favorites. However,I always feel a little sad when I read it because of the movie. Really have to concentrate on the meaning. How are you enjoying the first day of 2012?

  18. Once I read the above quote in a book about your hand into the hand of God. I've never been able to find the origin. So it comes from an old movie?

I wish you many wonderful moments in the new year. Thank you for your comments on my blog. I'm happy every time I read them.

    Lieve groet/ dear greetings.

  19. Oh yes Jedidja! It's from a wonderful movie called The Mortal Storm. Although you might find the Americans trying to affect a German accent somewhat silly. It has Jimmy Stewart in it and at least he doesn't try. A very poignant story, but certainly not a cheer-you-upper!

  20. Hi Jane, I was just out and about and thought I would pop by and say hello! I hope you are having a nice morning. I just got back from a little overnight trip. My best friend from California came out to visit her daughter who also lives in Georgia. We were able to get away for a day and go to a a bed and breakfast in Beautfort S.C. We had a wonderful visit. I think we talked for about 20 hours straight! :) It is good to be back home now though and I am looking forward to resting a bit today and working on some crocheting. I started a shawl that is in the new Interweave Crochet magazine. I am making it in garnet red. Have a lovely morning ahead! Delisa :)
