Comets

Hello dear friends!  Yesterday we had a storm and our electricity went out so I'm a day behind on everything, but I wanted to share this picture of comet NeoWise that our son, Scott, took while he was visiting us this past week.  This was taken at the harbor a few blocks from our house.  It was so large you could see it with the naked eye, even I could without my glasses, and I'm as blind as a bat! Stargazing is one of those simple pleasures that a family can do for free.  Unfortunately, as you can see by this picture which taken around midnight,  the sun is just beginning to fall beyond the horizon, so you have to be quite a night owl to be a stargazer  in these parts during the summer.  I'll write a longer post soon, but I wanted to get this out to you all.  Isn't it encouraging to know that the world is still a beautiful place, in spite of all the ugliness and fear that's out there?  Choose beauty.

  3. Superb shot, great contrast with the dark sky. Nature gives me hope and enjoyment here, the birds fly safely, the flowers bloom regardless, everyone entering NZ has to go into managed isolation, have 2 tests, if one is positive they are then moved to a quarantine place, at the moment all this is paid for by the government. A huge cost, but no new cases in the community. I continue to be so thankful we live here, and cannot explain how I feel about mass gatherings, crowds at beaches, and so many people co close. Stay safe up there, and know your life practises are the way to go for you all.

    1. Oh my, that sounds kind of scary, Jean. I hope that your tests will be ok. I hear a lot about false positives. Life up here is quite different, we are self-isolated for months at a time because of the weather and distance to any large towns and even in the summer very few people are around. It is very quiet but that is how we like it.

    2. Oh I misunderstood, Jean. I thought everyone was being tested. Guess it makes sense for people coming into the country. Meanwhile here in the States, one of our political parties is pushing for open borders, all the while calling for citizens to have mandatory masks (irregardless of medical & mental disabilities that limit some from wearing them) , self-isolate and coming soon mandatory vaccinations. Does not compute.

  4. That's beautiful Jane!

What a lovely place to live. I would like to live close by the water. It looks so peaceful there.

I agree....life is full of beauty and we should be focused on the blessings that surround us each day. Life is too short to be wasted on unpleasant people or situations.

Have a great day dear Jane.

    1. It is very peaceful, Shirley. In the fall after any tourists have gone back to the cities, it's like living in your own little world. And winters! Weeks go by without seeing anyone but our own little family. Some may think it is to isolated, by I think it is pretty much ideal.

  5. Beautiful picture Jane, indeed the world is wonderful, like you I live in a very rural community and we get cut off from the rest of NZ quite often (a long valley with mountain passes either end!) We were cut off 3 days last week by snow on the ranges down to 500ft (altitude). Whenever I have to go to the city I feel a real country bumpkin! But I wouldn't have it any other way.

    1. I will, Leslie. We are blessed to live in an area of very little light pollution, we even have a dark sky preserve just outside of town. It was pretty low in the sky so you probably wouldn't have been able to see in Ohio. Have a nice week!

    1. That's wonderful, Jo! We finally got rain and cooler weather also. Watering the garden every day sure is time consuming isn't it? Enjoy your vacation from watering and spend that time doing something fun!
